MAKING ROOM FOR THE COMMUNITY
Alley 1822
2024

Greensburg, Indiana
A view worth framing.
Created around the city's bicentennial in 2022, Alley 1822 brought new life to a forgotten downtown alley with repeating arches, layered lighting, custom planters and places for people to gather. The design also creates a natural visual connection to one of Greensburg's most recognizable landmarks—the tree growing from the top of the historic courthouse tower.
What was once simply a way to get from one street to another became a place for markets, dinners, live music, celebrations and everyday moments downtown.
SOMETIMES THE BEST SPACES AREN'T THE ONES YOU BUILD FROM SCRATCH. THEY'RE THE ONES YOU SEE DIFFERENTLY.
DESIGN & PLANNING
A PLAN FOR BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
The idea was simple: take an overlooked downtown alley and turn it into somewhere people actually wanted to be. The design needed to work for everyday foot traffic, but also have enough flexibility to host dinners, markets, live music and community events.

Early planning for Alley 1822 — mapping the arches, circulation, planting, gathering areas and sightline toward the courthouse.
WORKING THROUGH THE VISION.

Bringing it to life.
From idea to experience.
The design was intentionally simple. We worked with what was already there and added the elements that would make the space feel inviting. Repeating arches give the long alley a sense of rhythm, while natural wood, greenery and warm lighting soften the existing brick. Together, the elements create an environment that feels less like a passage and more like a destination.
