BUILDING A RETREAT ON THE GULF

Saint Joe Beach, Florida

Coastal, not cliché.

That was the big challenge for my brother and sister-in-law's place on the gulf. Their family spends a lot of time at the beach, so when they built this house, they wanted it to feel unmistakably coastal—but not in the typical beach house way.

Soft whites and warm woods create the foundation, while muted blues, greens and sandy neutrals bring in the colors of the coast. Vintage-inspired rugs, woven textures, brass accents and collected artwork keep the house from feeling too polished or predictable.

THE RESULT IS A HOME THAT FEELS CONNECTED TO THE BEACH WITHOUT FEELING OVERLY THEMED.

THE DESIGN DIRECTION

A softer take on coastal.

I wanted each space to feel individual while still feeling like part of the same home. The mood boards became a way to layer ideas, test combinations, and let the design evolve naturally from room to room.

Bringing it all together.

Collected, comfortable and connected.

Rather than repeating the same elements throughout the house, I carried the design from room to room through color, texture, materials, and small details. The result is a home that feels layered and connected without feeling too matched.
